The History of IGA
International Gateway Academy first took shape in 2003 under the ownership of Meşale Eğitim ve Danışmanlık Hizmetleri Ltd. (now wholly owned by Gateway Education Global Ltd.) to offer a high quality English-medium education to the children of expatriates. From the outset the school adopted a holistic philosophy with the aim of furthering the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social and physical development of the students.
In November 2003 a 12-year lease was signed on a building in Ümraniye and refurbished to accommodate a K-12 school. In September 2004 IGA was registered with the Turkish Ministry of Education (MEB) as a primary (K-8) and secondary (9-12) international school.
Grade 10 was added to the high school program in 2002-2003. Grade 11 was added in 2005-2006 and Grade 12 was added the following year with the first class of 4 students graduating in June 2007. The IGCSE program was implemented for English, Math, Science and Social Studies as a means of enabling UK/Commonwealth families to stay in the country longer by providing their children with a recognized high school qualification. The IGCSE program would also provide a high quality curriculum and external validation for our high school program. Both an American system with AP courses and a continuation of the Cambridge system with AS and A2 courses were offered.
For the past decade the school’s energies and resources have been directed at developing a complete K-12 school. Now that the academic structure has been established, the school has used the accreditation self-study process to determine where our energies need to be directed for the next phase of the school’s development.
